The corners of the mouth are partially pulled downward by a specific muscle called the depressor anguli oris muscle, also known as the DAO muscle. This is why this treatment is often referred to as a DAO treatment.

Downturned mouth corners can create a tired, sad or less approachable appearance. In some cases, a small build-up of saliva in the corners of the mouth may also lead to irritation or dryness of the skin. Because of this, treatment may serve both a cosmetic and functional purpose.
Drooping mouth corners are often caused by the natural ageing process and gradual volume loss in the face. Repeated tension in the muscles around the mouth may also contribute to the downward pull of the corners of the mouth. As a result, this concern can affect both younger and older individuals.
During the treatment, product is administered into the DAO muscle to reduce the downward pull of the mouth corners. By relaxing the muscle activity in this area, the mouth corners may appear more balanced, neutral or subtly lifted.
The mouth corners may appear more neutral or subtly lifted after treatment. In some cases, a combination treatment with fillers may be recommended if additional support is needed in the area.
